Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is a tactical RPG that combines turn-based strategy, character-driven storytelling, and a colorful fantasy world. The game follows Fang and his companions as they search for powerful Furies while pursuing the goal of resurrecting the Goddess. Their journey takes an unexpected turn after they encounter two mysterious women known as Muses, whose songs can influence the abilities of characters on the battlefield.
Combat is built around strategic positioning on grid-based battlefields with different elevations and environmental objects. Players need to consider movement, character placement, terrain, and enemy positions when planning their attacks. Rocks, boxes, grass, and other elements can affect movement and defensive advantages, giving battles more depth than simply selecting attacks each turn.
The introduction of the Muses adds a distinctive mechanic to the combat system. Their songs can strengthen allies and provide area-based effects, but positioning is important because enemies inside the affected area can also benefit. The returning Fairize and Avalanche Attack mechanics provide additional options for dealing with difficult encounters.
Outside battles, Location Shaping gives players another way to explore the world. By placing collected Furies at different locations on the world map, players can uncover hidden areas, treasures, items, and even additional Fairies. This system encourages experimentation and adds another layer to the game’s exploration.
The story also offers multiple routes, allowing the adventure to develop in different directions depending on the path players follow. With its combination of tactical battles, character interactions, music-based abilities, exploration, and fantasy storytelling, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord offers a distinctive RPG experience for Nintendo Switch players.
